Scrooge is at work among us!

Scrooge is at work among us!

Christmas is the season of goodwill and generosity to all. We are constantly encouraged to give to the poor and those in need. Yet this Christmas the Australian Government announced that it would to divert $375,00 million from its foreign aid budget to help provide basic support to asylum seekers in Australia (Sydney Morning Herald,  December 18).

Such miserliness knows no bounds.

Australia’s present foreign aid helps to fund programs in some of the poorest countries in the world — programs that really do save lives, that provide health, education and foster independence so the people can live happily with dignity in their own countries.

There is no more positive way of “stopping the boats”.

As Christians we should muster the power of the Church and raise our voices in anger against this unbelievable display of slight of hand.

The Australian Government should heed the advise of informed refugee advocates and act positively to implement their recommendations which would attack the problems at their source. Only then we can hold our heads high on the world stage.
