Blu, a rare macaw, was poached as a chick and then found and raised as a domestic pet for 15 years in theUSby Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann). Linda takes Blu toRioas the last male of the species at the invitation of Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro), a bird enthusiast who keeps the last female, the feisty Jewel (Anne Hathaway).

The macaws are kidnapped, and a predictable but enjoyable plot plays out against the setting of the stunningly animated backdrop ofRio de Janeiroat Carnival time.

There are two loves stories and lots of colourful slapstick between the human and feathered characters. Watch out for Nigel the evil Cockatoo, brilliantly voiced by Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords.

This fun and colourful film for the whole family is well executed without breaking any new ground.
