500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer

(M) Fox DVD/BD

Expectation and reality are poles apart when it comes to falling in love, which is something that Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) discovers the hard way when he falls for Summer Fin (Zooey Deschanel). You see Summer has decided that true love doesn’t exist, while Tom believes in love at first sight.

This quirky comedy by Marc Webb has a gentle, ironic dig at the classic rom-com, where lovers fall head over heels and, despite some pitfalls, eventually get married. The romantic waters are muddied as Tom believes he is in love with Summer but she just likes having him around.

The film employs to-camera observances, a song and dance number, matter of fact voice-overs and even a Fellini film to further the quirky notion that Tom is naïve in the ways of love and romance.

Levitt and Deschanel’s understated yet endearing performance further make you glad you spent time in their quirky company.

The Blu-Ray format has a raft of extras including deleted scenes, conversations with Deschanel and Levitt, music clips and much more; whereas the DVD is lighter on.
