The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer

(M) Roadshow DVD/BD

Matthew McConaughey plays Mickey Haller, a fast-talking wheeler-dealer defence lawyer, who often defends the seedier end of LA while working out of the back of his 1980 Lincoln Town Car.

Haller lands a dream role defending a rich playboy, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), accused of assault, and hopes this open-and-shut case will be a ticket to bigger cases in future.

The case becomes complicated as similarities emerge with a past case where Haller failed to successfully defend a man wrongly accused of murder.

A cat and mouse game develops between the defendant and his family, and the real killer. In the process, Haller’s trusted researcher Frank Levin (William H. Macy) is murdered after finding out some new information linking the crimes.

Haller’s ex-wife, Maggie McPherson (Marisa Tomei), works in the DA’s office and helps him out in the shadow of their on-again, off-again relationship.

This adaptation of Michael Connelly’s novel of the same name is a cut above TV’s offerings in this genre but, by the same token, owes much to the feel of late 1970s crime shows.

McConaughey breaks out of his clean-cut, rom-com stereotype with aplomb.

Fast-paced and classy, The Lincoln Lawyer is an entertaining courtroom drama with a bit of attitude.
