Roundup: The sound of silence, Revelation, religious education, John Mallison

In pursuit of silence

Desert spirituality seems to be about something very different: a radical loss of self, of identity and ego. This is kenosis, the self-emptying (the literal antithesis of self-fulfillment) that Paul ascribes to Christ in Philippians 2:7: “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” And at its core is silence.

The last trumpet

The meaning of the Apocalypse is ever malleable and ready to hand for whatever crisis one confronts. That is one lesson of Pagels’ book. Another is that we all should be vigilant to keep some of us from using the vision for violence against others.

Primary school religious education needs improvement – and fast

If we want to create a tolerant, mutually respectful society, we need to tackle the problem of woefully inadequate primary level RE.

Faith to live out his father’s dream

John Mallison eventually became a Methodist Church – later Uniting – minister. He was published internationally, conducted leadership-training events in 30 countries and served a term as NSW moderator of the Uniting Church.
