In pursuit of silence

Desert spirituality seems to be about something very different: a radical loss of self, of identity and ego. This is kenosis, the self-emptying (the literal antithesis of self-fulfillment) that Paul ascribes to Christ in Philippians 2:7: “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” And at its core is silence.
