Roundup: Climate change and famine
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that visiting Pacific nations threatened by rising seas had reinforced his belief that climate change was real and posed a genuine threat to humanity.
The United Nations has announced that Somalia’s famine has spread to a sixth area within the country, with officials warning that 750,000 people could die in the next few months unless aid efforts were scaled up.
“We don’t have to think about 2030 or 2050, in the recent memories we’ve had a lot more variability in our weather. This increasing variability of weather, which is associated with our changing climate scenarios, is going to continue to increase the variability in production.”
