It’s time to act: politicians urged to commit to action on social issues

Leading community services provider UnitingCare has released two papers urging the major political parties to make vulnerable people a priority in the lead up to the New South Wales State Election on Saturday March 26.

The UnitingCare Position Paper: NSW State Election 2011 sets out the five priority areas of affordable housing and homelessness, disability, juvenile justice, child protection and gambling. The organisation is asking the parties to demonstrate their commitment through policy and action.

UnitingCare Burnside’s paper 20 steps to create safe children, strong families, inclusive communities in a just society outlines 20 important policy measures across four key priority areas.

Jane Woodruff, CEO, UnitingCare Burnside said that if implemented by a future New South Wales Government, the 20 steps would help vulnerable children, young people and families get the help they need, when they need it, for as long as they need it.

The Rev. Harry Herbert, Executive Director, UnitingCare NSW.ACT said that “politicians need to remember important social issues affecting the community when addressing their election campaigns”.

“These are issues which affect many children, young people, families, individuals and older people in NSW just as much as health and infrastructure,” he said.

“It’s time for politicians to show that they are serious about improving quality of life for all of their constituents, particularly those most neglected under current societal structures.”

The two papers also encourage members of the public to raise awareness with local candidates about the issues raised, as well as asking candidates to demonstrate their support across various forums.

The papers can be viewed at UnitingCare’s without fear or favour website which includes ways to demonstrate support for action on social issues in the 2011 NSW State Election.
