#BreakFree2016 in Newcastle

A number of Uniting Church members and ministers joined in a day of action on Sunday 8 May at the world’s biggest coal port in Newcastle to highlight the dangers, particularly to vulnerable Pacific communities, of continuing reliance on energy from fossil fuels. #climatechange #keepitintheground

A flotilla of kayaks that included Pitt Street Uniting Church member Geoffrey Maddox sought to stop coal ships from entering the Harbour, which is the world’s biggest coal port.
The Assembly’s Rev Dr Chris Walker, his wife Dell Walker and Miriam Pepper of https://unitingearthweb.org.au/ were among 57 people arrested for blocking a rail bridge to the port.

Sydney Alliance Pacific Community organiser Liuanga Halaifonua Palu was one of several Pacific faith leaders who took part in the event, which was organised by the Pacific branch of 350.org.
