Australia and Korea: The 120 Years of History

Australia and Korea: The 120 Years of History

Myong Duk Yang, Yonsei University & Korean Society of Sydney

This book, which includes many fascinating stories highlighting significant events and people, provides a useful overview and chronology of the linkages that have developed between the people of Australia and Korea.

In my current role as Australia’s Ambassador to Korea, I see on a daily basis the positive legacy that has come from the efforts of the early pioneering individuals who did so much to build these linkages.

These include the early missionaries who ventured forth to provide spiritual and welfare support to their communities in Australia and Korea; the many young Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen who made significant sacrifices in the defence of the fledgling Republic of Korea; and the very positive contribution that Australia’s Korean community has made to modern Australia’s social richness and diversity. There are innumerable Australians and Koreans who in various small and large ways have made very valuable contributions. All of their efforts — and in many cases, hardships — have provided a solid foundation on which we continue to build and further deepen the very close, friendly relations between our peoples and countries.

This book Australia and Korea: The 120 Years of History will long serve as an invaluable record, reference point and inspiration to those who follow.
