Survey for volunteers

Survey for volunteers

Uniting Church members have been invited to participate in a historic survey that will lead to a better understanding of who volunteers in the church and what jobs they are doing.

The goal is to help the Synod facilitate implementation of the Work Health and Safety model Act. The result will be a report of data- and literature-grounded recommendations to improve Uniting Church volunteer engagement, improve OH&S training and manage risk while maintaining careful stewardship of resources.

The survey was designed by a member of Pitt Street Uniting Church, Wendy Hermance, as part of her University of Sydney Master of Project Leadership thesis on the impact of the new laws on New South Wales volunteer organisations.

In the United States Ms Hermance was a member of the United Church of Christ for nearly 20 years and a part of its Preservation and Maintenance Committee.

The project arose from her offer to assist Larry Keenan at Pitt Street Uniting Church to organise volunteer work days as she had done at the United Church of Christ.

She has been assisted by the Uniting Church’s Workplace Safety Manager Bill Tobin.

The Master of Project Leadership is a professional degree for project managers, executives and senior managers seeking to develop their leadership and strategic thinking capability in order to lead projects at an organisational level.

Developed in response to increasing demand from industry, it focuses on developing and enhancing the skills required to establish tailored and sophisticated frameworks, as well as exploring cutting-edge concepts around open innovation and design thinking.

Through the application of various models and theories, it provides the tools to understand the dynamics of delivery and change, as well as manage the complexities around decision-making.

Ms Hermance is the first student to finish the course.
