6 March, 2015

Rev. Myung Hwa Park, Moderator of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of NSW and the ACT has provided the following statement in response to the conclusion of the Royal Commission case study into child sexual abuse at Knox Grammar School.

The Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of NSW and the ACT would like to thank the survivors and their families who have come forward to speak at the Royal Commission.  We commend them for their courage and continue to hold them in our prayers.

Rev. Dr Andrew Williams, General Secretary of The Uniting Church in Australia Synod of NSW and the ACT, has attended the hearing at the Royal Commission over the past two weeks, and has spoken with survivors and their families.

Hearing the devastating impact of the sexual abuse which occurred over decades at Knox Grammar School has been humbling and moving.

The Church is deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the survivors and their families have endured.

The Church is committed to healing and justice for the survivors and their families.

The Church encourages anyone who has experienced child sexual abuse within the Uniting Church to contact the Royal Commission or the Church.

The Uniting Church looks forward to responding to the recommendations from the Royal Commission and to working with Knox Grammar and all its schools and agencies in NSW and the ACT to create a safe environment.

  1. I presume any members of the Knox Board from that period who are still appointed have offered their resignations. I hope they are accepted. I am very concerned that this happened in our church, which has a strict policy of involving the police at the earliest opportunity.
