More Details:

On Wednesday 10th November, Christian Students Uniting (CSU) are launching their digital magazine. This year’s magazine is jam-packed with poetry, prose and artwork by students and alumnae of CSU. The theme is “Keeping Faith, Doing Justice, Building Community,” a motto which has guided the formation of young disciples through tertiary ministry for the past two decades.

The livestreamed launch event will begin at 7:30pm on the CSU Facebook page, and the digital magazine will be released the following day. Below is an excerpt from the magazine’s introduction.

Keeping Faith. Doing Justice. Building Community.

Three guiding principles. Three calls to action. Three welcomings home.

We take these words with us as we open our Bibles together, and with them our minds and hearts. We bellow these words into crowds over the thunder of our own protest drums. We hold these words in our outstretched palms, to be filled with beef patties and bread on a beach.

In this magazine, you will find twelve meditations on these themes that have shaped and continue to shape the people of Christian Students Uniting. From trees that grow without seeing to the power of a broken teacup, our writers bring you startling discoveries about themselves, God and our place in the world.

We invite you into exploring what sanctuary means in our discipleship journeys; into reclaiming the divine in our own bodies; and into weirdly wonderful dreams. We invite you into the relationship between writer and reader, artist and viewer, as we grapple together with faith, justice and community.

Many of the pieces in this magazine began their life during a series of workshops on “creative writing as a spiritual practice” in July 2021. These workshops were a space to come together and enter into a creative, collaborative time as a community to reflect on our faith. This magazine represents that act of gathering, as we open ourselves to the page and to each other.

The spiritual practice of engaging creatively with the page has been cathartic for many of our writers, whether or not they submitted to this magazine. Our own kind of sanctuary, creative writing can be not only an escape from but a return to the reality of our lives in 2021, equipped with metaphor and imagery to rest in that tension.
