Town Hall event provides vital connection for Sydney’s homeless

Sydney’s homeless will have the opportunity to receive dental checks, haircuts, meals, information counsel and support at the Sydney Homeless Connect event at the Sydney Town Hall on 7 July.

Throughout the day major homeless service providers like Wesley Mission offer information and advice on services such as crisis care, financial and legal advice, employment information and housing assistance.

Homeless people also receive information about accessing government services – and much more. They can receive medical and dental attention, a haircut, massage and a hot meal.

Last year Wesley Mission provided more than 73,700 nights of accommodation to homeless people across Sydney and beyond. Staff know how difficult it can be for homeless people to access the right information and services.

At Thursday’s event Wesley Mission will be providing a swag of information on Wesley Mission Homelessness services through fliers, face-to-face conversations and referrals in a safe and gracious environment.

“Wesley Mission will be sharing how we can better help and support people experiencing homelessness and the various options and services available to them, particularly during times of crisis,” said Wesley Mission CEO the Rev Dr Keith Garner.

“Although our hope is to engage people who are homeless, we are also seeking to strengthen our bonds with other agencies and increase our own knowledge in order to work better together.

“Many homeless people do not know where to turn for help and advice. They often have complex issues that require a multifaceted response. Addressing the needs of homeless people is more than just providing a bed.”

Wesley Mission representatives at the event include staff from a range of backgrounds comprising, mental health, gambling counselling, emergency relief and therapeutic support workers.

Now in its seventh year, Sydney’s Homeless Connect begins at 10 am and runs to 3 pm.

Details of the event can be found at Sydney Homeless Connect.
