Rebuilding hope in Nepal

Almost 5000 people have been reported dead and one million children are estimated to need urgent help. Clean water, food supplies and adequate shelter are in high demand by an estimated eight million people. The aftermath of Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal has been massive, and requires immediate action to help save lives.

Joining other international aid organisations, UnitingWorld is racing to assist an entire country devastated by a natural disaster and its consequences. An agency of the National Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia, UnitingWorld is a member of ACT Alliance. ACT has workers in Nepal, assessing needs and calling for financial assistance to boost local humanitarian efforts.

Nestled between India and Tibet and famous for its Himalayan mountains, Nepal is a picturesque yet relatively impoverished place. Capital city Kathmandu and the Gorkha region was hardest hit by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, but widespread loss of buildings and houses is not as alarming as the human cost. Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala predicted that the death toll could rise to 10,000 people, indicating how vital it is that aid and support are swiftly provided.
