Donate now to help Nepal after second quake

Sad news this week that Nepal suffered another powerful earthquake, prompting UnitingWorld to renew its call for donations to help humanitarian efforts.

The 7.3-magnitude quake struck north-eastern Nepal, near the Everest base camp. About 2000 people have been injured and 80 killed, with Nepal still reeling from the earthquake three weeks ago that killed almost 8000 people and left a trail of destruction through Kathmandu and remote villages.

UnitingWorld is a member of the ACT Alliance, which has agencies assessing situations across Nepal. Current needs continue to be search and rescue, water, food and blankets and shelter.

“The Homeless Jesus is a reminder of their plight and terror, whatever their nationality or creed – and an icon of solidarity with them,” stated Michael Jackson, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin.

“I think it’s in the safe or something,” guesses Portman. She explains that during production of Black Swan, director Darren Aronofsky  told her he had been reading “the story of Abraham” to his children and talking with them about “not worshipping false idols”. Referring to her Oscar, Portman draws a link between what Aronofsky brought up and displaying an Academy Award in her home. “This is literally worshipping gold idols — if you worship it. That’s why it’s not displayed on the wall. It’s a false idol.”
