Leading American speaker to address transforming communities conference

A leading American social change motivator, author and public speaker will be one of the guest speakers at a Sydney conference that aims to equip congregations and community organisations to be more effective at engaging with the communities they serve.

Rich Harwood, the founder and president of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, will address delegates attending the Community Change session of the five-day Transforming Communities conference in North Parramatta from 24-28 August.

The institute teaches and coaches people and organisations to solve pressing problems and change how communities work together.

Mr Harwood will share tools congregations and community organisations can use to enable them to turn from an inward to an outward focus and better engage with the communities they serve.

Topics covered during the Community Change session, on Tuesday 25 August, will include the 3As of public life – authority, authenticity and accountability; turning outward to make your work more relevant and significant to your community; and community engagement.

This session will be of particular interest to congregations and organisations that are keen to do more to engage with and help their local communities but are unsure how to go about it. Delegates will discover some useful tools they can use to do more to connect with their communities.

Transforming Communities is being organised by Uniting Mission and Education to build capacity in leadership, community organising, community restoration, creative learning and formation of multicultural communities. It is designed for Uniting Church leaders, staff, board and council members, congregation members, UnitingCare staff and other interested people.

The conference will be held at the Uniting Church Ministry Centre (16 Masons Drive) from 9.30am-4.30pm. Registrations for the Community Change session are $80, with lunch and morning and afternoon teas included.
