Cyclone Pam: Urgent need as food to run out in Vanuatu in the next 7 days

The Vanuatu Minister of Agriculture has released a statement urgently calling for international assistance in the wake of the Category 5 Cyclone on 14 March.

“Our Agricultural experts estimate that Vanuatu’s people will run out of food in less than one week from today” – The Honorable David Tosul.

Act for Peace, the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia, and its local partner in Vanuatu are responding to the humanitarian crisis and providing urgent relief to the community.

Act for Peace’s Disaster Risk Resilience Manager, Geoff Robinson, is in Port Vila and available for interview on the impact of the food shortages and the urgent needs of the community.

“The food shortage has put the entire Vanuatu community at risk. We need to respond right now to avoid further deaths and a country wide humanitarian crisis” Mr Robinson said.
