All we are saying is give peace a chance

All we are saying is give peace a chance

Did you notice the International Day of Peace ?

The annual event is “devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples”, according to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

At the same time as the UN’s International Day of Peace was happening on September 21, the UN’s Summit for Refugees and Migrants was being held this week in New York City.

So, the UN was promoting peace internationally AND also holding a summit about the ongoing impact of our world not being a peaceful place.

Talk about a clear picture of where we’ve been at for a long, long, long time — eager for a peace that seems impossible to achieve.

Yes, that sounds gloomy and a whole lot like giving up. But I don’t mean it that way. I’m just calling it as it is.

Different song, same issue

Like Beatles legend John Lennon indicated in 1969 when his famous song Give Peace a Chance was released, peace on earth hasn’t been embraced by all humanity.

Oh, speaking of John Lennon, his Beatles band-mate Ringo Starr released a song this week to support International Day of Peace.

Now The Time Has Come is something of a song sequel to Give Peace a Chance. That might sound cool until you notice how, despite it being almost 50 years since Give Peace a Chance came out, Ringo Starr still has to make the same plea Lennon made.

Come on, world, when are you going to give peace a chance?

The solution is born

Singing songs about peace, and having dates in our calendars dedicated to peace, are nice things. Hopefully, such prompts to peace will stir us in that direction.

What’s going to make the difference, though? On the world-wide scale? I don’t need to remind anyone about the mind-boggling assortment of examples of un-peace that our planet serves up on a constant basis.

So, then, what’s going to end the need for the UN’s International Day of Peace, and allow famous musicians to stop writing protest songs?

A baby. Yup, no joke. A baby.

“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”

That prediction of the “Prince of Peace” is recorded in the Old Testament book of Isaiah (chapter 9, verse 6).

So, according to this report at least, a baby will be born and he will grow up into the Prince of Peace. He’ll also be Mighty God, too.

Fight for peace

You might find it hard to believe that one baby could be the answer to the world’s lack-of-peace problem. That’s understandable; it does sound like a make-believe story.

Yet the Bible is an account of human history that reveals this “Prince of Peace” to be Jesus — who was a real baby that grew up into a revolutionary leader who totally transformed the world order.

If Jesus was real and proved himself to be the baby Isaiah was predicting, then he must be the Prince of Peace. And if he is the Prince of Peace, why is our world still such a place lacking in peace?

Perhaps you should look more closely at Jesus’s actions, words and impact to grasp why our grasp on peace is not what the Prince of Peace promotes.

From there, we might better know how to fight for real, lasting peace — in the army of the Prince of Peace.
